DOG'S BEST FRIEND: THE STORY OF AN UNBREAKABLE BOND

By Simon Garfield

Ludo, Simon Garfield's beloved black Labrador retriever and one of many millions of canines that have been integral to our lives, is a dog. How did this dog become a top dog? These faithful dogs have become our best friends and helped us in many ways, including hunting, bomb disposal and detection of cancer. Dog's best friend explores the history of this bond and how it has impacted so many lives, both canine and human.

Garfield begins with the earliest visual representations--dogs depicted in ancient rock art--and ends at the laboratory that first sequenced the canine genome. We meet the Corgis of Buckingham Palace and the Soviet space dogs, as well as a border collie who can recognize more than 1,000 plush toys. Garfield shares the secrets of some of the best dog trainers in the world, takes us into the wild worlds of dog breeding and dog shows and reveals the psychological roots of the human-dog bond. Ludo also pops in his snout from time to time.

HOW STELLA LEARNED TO TALK: THE GROUNDBREAKING STORY OF THE WORLD’S FIRST TALKING DOG

By Christina Hunger

Christina Hunger, a speech-language pathologist, was immediately able to make connections between her job as a speech-language pathologist and Stella her puppy when she first returned home. She worked with toddlers who had significant delays in their language development, and used Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC), devices to assist them with communication. She wondered at night if dogs could understand what we said to them. Can dogs use AAC in communication with humans?

Christina decided to test her theory with Stella. She started using a small, paw-sized button that she programmed with her voice to make Stella go outside. Stella has now used over thirty word buttons in her bank for years and can use them all together to make complete sentences.

How Stella Learned is a memoir and a how-to guide. The book chronicles the journey Christina & Stella took together, starting with their first meeting and ending with Stella speaking her first word. It also shows Stella the communication techniques Christina taught Stella. These are broken down into easy stages that can be used by dog owners to communicate with their pet.

Kerry's wife encouraged him, despite all the hopelessness, to take a short walk to the nearest shop. He persevered despite overwhelming panic and unbearable pain. Along the way, he met Max, his adorable yard dog. Kerry saw the Spaniel peering up through the railings and found comfort in his brown eyes. Their lives were forever changed by this chance encounter.

Max was Kerry's refuge and motivation, and Kerry was Max's caretaker. This is their amazing, inspiring story.
